Rules for Learner Drivers
Learners need a provisional driving licence. Full details of the requirements and process for obtaining a licence online are available from the DirectGov website. You can also apply using form D1 from the Post Office.
Briefly, you will need to:
- Be resident in Great Britain
- Be at least 17 years old (16 if you receive the higher rate disability living allowance). You apply up to three months before your birthday.
- Be able to pass the eyesight test - that means being able to read a new-style number plate from 20 metres away (wearing any glasses you will normally wear for driving).
- Have a passport or other proof of identity.
The licence costs £50.
During lessons and practice you must:
- Be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years old who has a current full licence, held for at least 3 years
- Display regulation L plates
- Make sure that any vehicle you drive is roadworthy and properly taxed and insured
